Your Health: The Scale is the Enemy!

Is it the number? Or, is it how you feel about the number? Maybe the number is not the problem… Maybe it’s the way your body feels. Fatigue, bloating, abdominal discomfort, depression, lack of accomplishment and numerous other symptoms of a sedentary lifestyle can rob you of life’s special moments. The Texan takes a look at what can help you have the life you deserve.

The summer of 2009 is in the history books, do you even remember your New Year’s Resolution? Have you exceeded your goals or keep saying I’ll get to them? Did you get into that bikini or flatten that stomach?

In 2007 almost 66% of adults in Texas were obese or overweight. If these trends continue, by the year 2040 75% of all Texas adults will be overweight or obese. For many of these Texans, that resolution certainly included losing weight. Stepping on the scale and seeing that number drop can make or break your weight loss efforts, but is the scale a true reflection of your health?

Most scales simply measure the weight of your mass, which includes fat, muscle, bone, soft tissue, organs, blood and water. Focusing on the scale as your only measure of weight loss can be frustrating and futile. It is only one piece of the body weight puzzle that should also include body fat and circumference measurements. Together, these three factors will give you a much clearer picture of your health and fitness.
